Yeast Infection

A yeast infection, otherwise known as candidiasis, is the fungal infection caused by Candida, a yeast-like fungus. There is always the presence of a few quantities of Candida in our system, but it is the maintaining balance of bacteria that prevents the proliferation of such fungi.

Sometimes, due to certain factors, candida may multiply in numbers and can cause infections. As usual, these fungal infections usually begin on moist and warm parts of the body. If it occurs in the female’s private parts, it is termed as vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Factors contributing to the overgrowth of Candida include stress, Pregnancy and other illnesses. These risk factors weaken the immune system thus easily causing the infections. Medications like birth control pills and steroids can also severe the growth of fungi.

It is important to note that females with diabetes or high counts of blood sugar are at greater risk of acquiring yeast infections.

Signs and Symptoms

In severe cases, there is that burning discomfort in the opening areas of the vagina. This causes uneasiness especially when urinating. During sexual intercourse, females with yeast infections may have the pain and discomfort.

Treatment

Treatments for vaginal yeast infections come in the forms of creams, ointments, tablets or suppositories directly inserted into the vagina. These medications include miconazole (Monistat, Monazole, and Micozole), clotrimazole (Clotrimaderm, Canesten), nystatin, terconazole (Terazole), butoconazole (Femstat), and tioconazole (GyneCure). Oral medications such as fluconazole (Diflucan Oral) may also be administered. However this treatment should not be taken during pregnancy.

Several medications for treating vaginal yeast infections are now available over-the-counter (OTC) without the need for prescriptions. But these medications should be for recurring cases of infections and should not be applied on the occurrence of first time symptoms. On first episodes of vaginal yeast infection, it is highly recommended to visit the doctor for a thorough check-up. This is to make sure that resulting vaginal discharges and discomfort are not of sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis.

Prevention

The following are steps to prevent the onset of vaginal yeast infections:

  • Use soft cotton made underwear. This makes sure that your private parts are kept dry and away from stagnant moisture.
  • Keep your vagina in constant hygiene by changing sanitary napkins or tampons regularly.
  • Choose carefully the kind of soap you use when taking a bath or the brands of vaginal douches and sprays.
  • During treatment, be sure to follow the doctor’s length of prescription for the antibiotics. Do not prolong them beyond what is prescribed.
In cases of diabetes, always maintain stability in your blood sugar count.
