Jock Itch Treatment
Do you have Jock Itch?

A fungal infection in a person’s groin and genitals has been a disturbing skin condition for both males and females. Jock itch or tinea cruris is caused by the warm moist environment in the inner thighs, buttocks and genitals.

Common signs of Jock Itch include itchiness and redness of the skin. The rash is usually in ring-shaped form.

Jock Itch may be acquired from stayed heat and moisture in stretched clothing. From this, a suitable environment for fungi is then created. Athletes are the common victims of jock itch. A greater percentage in men is afflicted rather than females. Jock itch may not only affect the inner thighs but may also develop underneath the breasts and armpits.

Jock Itch: Signs and Symptoms

The basic symptoms of any fungal infection include skin itching and redness in the moist parts of the body. As for jock itch, since the affected area is the groin, burning sensation may also occur as well. As time passes, the rash will develop skin flakes and later on may crack or peel.

The presence of jock itch can be uncomfortable for individuals in wearing tight underwear or clothing. Exercising or jogging may worsen the rash as well as its symptoms.

Jock Itch: Common Causes

Microorganisms are the main causes of fungal infections. Once they become bodily parasites, skin problems then appear. Dermatophytes or the mold-like fungi dwell on the outer layer of your skin cells. As said earlier, the fungi that cause jock itch live on moist and warm skin cells. Thus, allowing a subsequent infection to begin.

Jock itch may not be too contagious. However, caution must be taken in sharing towels or clothing with an infected individual. Safe sexual intercourse must also be maintained to avoid transmittance of such disease.

Jock Itch: Prevention

For mild cases of jock itch, over-the-counter (OTC) topical ointments and creams are the best treatments. These ointments heal the skin’s outermost layer. Look for OTC medications with ingredients of clotrimazole (Lotrimin), tolnaftate (Tinactin), and miconazole (Micatin). Unless otherwise prescribed by doctors, OTC medications can be administered twice a day for two weeks.

Application should be made with two finger widths surrounding the rash. Treatments for jock itch can also be effective for other fungal infections of the body like athlete’s foot although dosage may be longer for four weeks.

If symptoms persist like severe itching, redness and occurrence of blisters, doctors may recommend topical steroid such as hydrocortisone. However steroids cannot be applied without a prior doctor’s prescription. Without the consultation of the health professional, symptoms or the fungal infection itself may worsen.
